As a result of field investigations into coastal transition and sand transport, it became known that the breakwaters that are intended to protect the South Holland coast against sand deposits do not contribute in any way to coastal defence. In other words, they are superfluous. These breakwaters consist of beautiful black basalt blocks. Along the Zuid-Holland coast, south of The Hague, there are dunes where the debris from the WWII bombardment has been dumped, the beach in front of these dunes is quiet and has often been the setting for cultural productions (festival Crossing Border once started there).
All in all, the MIXD seemed to be a good location to create an open air theatre here with the released basalt after classical Greek example.
